Whatever takes up ownership in your heart, above God, has become your idol. Our idols are the undetected goodness our lives have been gifted. The problem isn’t its existence, but how it takes up your life. The hole this creates in one’s heart is dumbfounded because it’s camouflaged with the essence of your God-given desires. Trickery belongs to the devil, and he is good at it. He wants the very blessings of God to become more important to you than God Himself. This way, if they are robbed from you, you seem to think you can’t exist.
This type of living is dangerous because as you know, only God Himself can fill your soul to overflowing. Only His love will satisfy.
Confronted with my idol and the twisted pain it was causing me, I begged to trade it for the real thing. It is here God revealed the only way forward was to give Him this desire, in exchange for Himself. God wouldn’t heal this affliction in my heart until I gave the desire to Him in full repentance.
“ Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul.” 1 Peter 2:11.
